Development-driven media practitioners shine in ‘Gandingan’

Gandingan2018

Media practitioners and programs that have pursued fair and informative reporting of developmental issues, such as gender equality, education, peace, environmental conservation, and livelihood, took home the Gandingan trophies that were awarded to them on March 17 at the D.L. Umali Hall in UPLB.

Gandingan Awards, now on its 12th year, aims to encourage the production and airing of developmental radio and television programs. It is an annual event of the UP Community Broadcasters’ Society (UP CBS), a student organization at the College of Development Communication (CDC). A panel of judges composed of professors, students, and experts determined the winners for every category.

GMA Network dominated the awards night, winning 23 accolades for contents produced by GMA 7, GMA Regional TV, GMA News Online, and GMA News TV, which also won the Gandingan ng Kaunlaran, the highest award at stake.

Gandingan founder and CDC Asst. Prof. Mark Lester M. Chico, in his message, urged the media to step up and deepen their reporting and storytelling. He also encouraged them to work hand-in-hand with the academe and other sectors of society to achieve a peaceful Philippines. This year’s Gandingan theme is “Lipad tungo sa kapayapaan (Fly towards peace).”

Dr. Maribel L. Dionisio-Sese, director of the Interactive Learning Center, who delivered the welcome address on behalf of Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr., acknowledged the awardees’ contribution to nation-building.

“We recognize those people, organizations, and institutions that are empowering the average Filipino citizen and helping them live better lives. It is in light of their hard work and dedication that we are giving them the award, with the hope that it will reaffirm and strengthen their commitment to continuing their good work,” Dr. Sese said.

Proceeds from Gandingan’s ticket sales, according to the UP CBS, will be donated to the Kanlungan ng Kababaihan at Kabataan in Calauan, Laguna, a shelter for the youth and abused women.
