UPLB academic employee union tackles psycho-social health

The All UP Academic Employee Union-Los Baños (AUPAEU-UPLB) conducted a psycho-social health forum for UPLB students and employees on Nov. 13 at the Makiling Ballroom Hall, Student Union building.

Emmanuel V. Dumlao, AUPAEU-UPLB president and a faculty member at the Department of Humanities-College of Arts and Sciences, said that the forum attempts to address the importance of mental health awareness and to propose solutions to the problem.

An AVP presented by the Union portrayed the situation of mental health in the Philippines and how mental illness can affect the lifestyle of students and employees.

“The AUPAEU is planning to conduct a series of psycho education forums and mental health promotion and capacity building activities. This is a huge step for us to promote a university that supports its community’s psycho-social well-being,” said Dan Paolo R. Yema, head of the AUPAEU psycho-social health program, during his presentation of the event’s rationale.

Dr. Gene Nisperos, vice chairperson of the Health Alliance for Democracy, discussed ways to break the social stigma on mental illness. “Social support is very important. Having to discuss the condition with friends can be a tremendous help,” he said.

“Faculty members should have a sincere dialogue with the students, not just in the classroom setting. We should also avoid foul language against anyone suffering from mental illness,” Dr. Nisperos added.

Dr. Nisperos concluded the event by stating the need to strengthen UPLB’s mental health program by having an adequate number of staff to accommodate cases in the campus. (John Glen S. Sarol)
