The Institute of Crop Science (ICropS) officially welcomed its first director, Dr. Edna A. Aguilar, during a program on Sept. 4 at the Nemesio Mendiola Hall, UPLB.

This comes nine months after the restructuring and naming of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS), where ICropS emerged as one of its nine units. Dr. Aguilar, a full professor, first served as officer-in-charge on Feb. 3. Her three-year term as ICropS director is effective June 16.

In her message to the 146-strong ICropS workforce, Dr. Aguilar said that she looks forward to the next three years of leading the Institute. She emphasized the value of mentoring the young faculty, developing faculty members, REPS, and administrative staff, and preparing students for leadership roles. This way, Dr. Aguilar said, the Institute will be able to fulfill its mandates in support to UP as a national and global research and public service university.

Dr. Tonette P. Laude, associate dean for instruction of CAFS, in her welcome remarks, expressed gladness and gratitude over Dr. Esguerra’s leadership of ICropS. She reiterated the roles that each of CAFS’ units, including ICropS, would play in modernizing the country’s agriculture and in linking farmers to the value chain.

Meanwhile, Dr. Enrico P. Supangco, dean of CAFS, extended his well-wishes to Dr. Aguilar through a text message that was read to during the program. Dr. Supangco, who has held several important positions in the University, reminded Dr. Aguilar of the essence of fairness and mentoring in leadership. He also gave tips to Dr. Aguilar on how to achieve work-life balance now that she is at the helm of an academic institute.

The event also served as a venue for the ICropS workforce and students to cast votes for the “Fix-this-logo,” a logo revision contest of the Institute joined in by 44 participants. (Kristine Araguas)
