OSA recognizes leaders, student achievers at 57th anniv


For its 57th anniversary, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) paid tribute to those who have given their time and talents in building up OSA. The special recognition ceremony was held on June 27 at the Makiling Ballroom, Student Union, with the theme “Leveling Up Management, Initiatives and Accomplishments Towards Excellent Service (OSA LUMINATES).”

Leading the honorees were the two OSA Luminaries: Dr. Portia G. Lapitan and Dr. Oscar B. Zamora, present and immediate past vice chancellors for academic affairs (OVCAA), respectively. The OVCAA serves as the supervising unit of OSA.

Dr. Lapitan was acknowledged for her “unrelenting passion and dedication to serve the students by providing full support to innovative programs and activities of OSA.” The Office also expressed appreciation for her care and concern to develop honorable, excellent, and well-rounded students and for her heartfelt commitment in ensuring the welfare of staff and the brighter direction and future of OSA.

Dr. Zamora, on the other hand, was recognized for his compassion for the overall welfare and the empowerment of students and student organizations.

Retiring personnel and graduating student assistants were also presented with service awards for their significant contribution to OSA.

OSA also gave special certificates to recognize the outstanding achievements of students and organizations. Among the students who were recognized were Paul Jhon P. Diezon, Jose Rizal Model Student of the Philippines in 2016; Ana Mariz Z. Pineda and Nathan P. Felix, participants of the ARC Young Leaders Camp 2016 by the ARC Refreshments Corporation; John Derrick M. Cordoñez, the first president of the ASEAN University Council Union; Jose Lorenzo E. Lim, editor-in-chief of the UPLB Perspective; and Merwin Jacob B. Alinea, chairperson of the University Student Council.

On the other hand, the recognized student organizations included Team Proactive Kabilin, finalist in the UNILAB Foundation’s 7th Ideas Positive Run for the Project Kabilin Kalusugan for LBNanays; the UPLB Genetics Society and Enactus UPLB, two of the top 20 finalists in the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) 2017. Enactus UPLB also received an award for winning second place in the Enactus Philippines 2016 National Finals.

Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. commended OSA in his inspirational message, saying that the Office has been proactive in helping students reach their full potential through a wide variety of programs and services. Meanwhile, Dr. Portia G. Lapitan, vice chancellor for academic affairs, commended OSA for recognizing students’ efforts and accomplishments.

Present during the celebration were Dr. Nina M. Cadiz, director of OSA, who delivered the opening remarks, and Dr. Simplicio M. Medina, director of the Office of International Linkages.

Past OSA directors also graced the event, namely: Dr. Candida B. Adalla, Dr. Leticia E. Afuang, Dr. Eugenia M. Castillo, and Dr. Patrick R. McDivith   (Jessa Jael S. Arana)
