UPLB and UP System Grants, Awards and Recognition

UPLB and the UP System recognizes the contribution of its faculty and staff to the body of knowledge by providing grants, awards and recognitions. Aside from the university, many government agencies have rewarded UPLB as an institution, and its personnel for various scientific and administrative achievements. Below are some of the major awards given by UPLB and the System:


UPLB OUTSTANDING PERSONNEL/ PROGRAMS AWARDS

UPLB Outstanding Researcher/ Research Program/ Creative Artist Award

Eligibility
  • All faculty members and REPS doing research/creative work and with unquestionable moral integrity shall be eligible for nomination. Any staff member whose moral integrity is doubtful should not be considered for nomination.

    While it is true that it is difficult to measure a person's moral integrity, nevertheless, one who is known to have committed gross acts of plagiarism, intellectual dishonesty and other acts of unprofessionalism should not be nominated for the award.

Scope
  • UPLB Outstanding Researcher/ Research Team Award is a recognition of exemplary individual performance in the different fields of research in the University. Hence, this special University recognition is envisioned to promote research work in the different fields while providing the additional, perhaps more vital, impetus to heighten the research spirit and enthusiasm. More importantly, this could be the best way by which the researcher will know that his work does not go unappreciated. It may also contribute towards academic excellence in research.
  • The University also recognizes the value of excellence in the arts. Hence, another special University recognition in the form of Outstanding Creative Artist Award is given to a UPLB faculty, researcher or staff who has shown remarkable achievements in the creative arts.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • One award each for Outstanding Researcher, Creative Artist and Outstanding Research Team will be awarded during a convocation marking the yearly Foundation Anniversary of UP Los Baños.
  • The individual and team awardees will be given each a plaque of recognition, and P25,000.00 cash award.

UPLB Outstanding Extensionist/ Extension Program/Project Award

Eligibility
  • All faculty members and REPS doing extension work shall be eligible for nomination. A nominee should satisfy the following minimum qualifications:
    1. A regular appointment.
    2. Continuous service in the University, for the last five (5) years.
    3. Moral integrity- any staff member whose moral integrity is doubtful should not be considered for nomination. While it is true that it is difficult to measure a person's moral integrity, nevertheless, one who is known to have committed gross acts of plagiarism, intellectual dishonesty and other acts of unprofessionalism should not be nominated for the award.
    4. Programs or projects must be in operation for at least three (3) years and on a continuing basis. If the program/project is nominated, there should be a listing of the faculty, extension and professional staff and/or administrative personnel involved in the project from the time of conceptualization to the planning and implementation stages of the program/project, as well as adequate documentation of the process and outcome.
Scope
  • The award is aimed to encourage leadership, resourcefulness, effectiveness and dynamism in carrying out the extension functions of the University.
  • Extension/community services that can be considered for the award are:
    1. Training programs - non-degree and non-credit courses offered by a college or unit.
    2. Technical Assistance and Advisory Services - to agencies, organizations, associations and other groups.
    3. Communication/Information Services - communication, and/or dissemination of knowledge and skills to particular client groups through the various means of dissemination such as person-to-person contact, radio, television, newspaper and other printed materials.
    4. Extension methodologies development through:
      • Community Outreach Service- extension activities conducted by a team or college or unit in areas outside UPLB, e.g. community-based social services, pilot projects, mobile clinic, etc.
      • Direct Public Service - extension activities conducted by individual, team or unit within UPLB premises to benefit individuals and communities.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • One award each for Outstanding Extensionist and Outstanding Extension Program/ Project will be awarded during a convocation marking the yearly Foundation Anniversary of UP Los Baños.
  • The individual and team awardees will be given each a plaque of recognition, and P20,000.00 cash award.

UP SYSTEM CREATIVE AND RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Creative Work and Research Grant

Eligibility
  • Regular, full-time faculty with the rank of Assistant Professor and higher, REPS with the rank of University Researcher I and higher.
  • The track record of applicants in completing creative/ research projects shall be examined by the screening committees of the CUs and the System.
  • Applicants may apply individually or as a group.
  • In highly exceptional cases, instructor and REPS with rank lower than University Researcher I may be considered for the grant.
Scope
  • The grant shall support research or creative projects in any field, such as literary work, scientific research, artistic work, invention, software, provided the proposed project is within the discipline/ field of the applicant.
  • The grant shall be for 1 year, and in rare cases, may be extended up to 6 months at most. No additional amount shall be provided for the extension.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • The contract rate, obtained by multiplying the total hours by the hourly rate, shall amount to 1,080 hours x (annual salary/ 1,848 hours), or approximately 58 percent of the annual salary.

Textbook Writing Grant

Eligibility
  • Regular, full-time faculty with the rank of Assistant Professor and higher, REPS with the rank of University Researcher I and higher who engaged or assist in teaching, may apply for the grant, provided they meet the qualifications of the Creative Work and Research Grant.
  • The track record of applications in completing creative/research projects (whether UP-funded or not) shall examined by the screening committees of the CU and the System.
  • In highly meritorious cases, instructors and REPS faculty below the rank of University Researcher I may be considered for the grant.
  • Current recipients of a textbook writing gran (including grants to translate textbooks) from any center, institute, or unit of UP may not apply for this grant.
  • Applicants may apply individually or as a group. In the case of a group, the total amount of the grant shall be prorated according to the rank of the applicants and the proportion of work to be done by each.
Scope
  • The grant shall support the writing of textbooks including reference books, workbooks, and laboratory manuals, in print or other media, in whatever language the course in taught.
  • The grant shall not cover proposals for non-degree informal programs).
  • Neither shall the grant provide for publication costs.
  • Priority shall be given to textbooks for core courses of undergraduate programs, difficult courses of undergraduate programs, difficult courses and/or courses with high student enrolment, and courses for which no good (foreign and local) textbooks are available.
  • The grant shall be for one year and, in exceptional cases, may be extended up to six months at most, which extension must be justified and proof of work thus far completed, presented. No additional funds shall be provided for the extension.

System Support for International Publications of Literary Works

Eligibility
  • UP faculty whose literary work meets the criteria below may apply for the grant:
    1. The literary work should be in book form.
    2. The work should ne either in written in English or the author should be willing to have the work translated into English.
    3. The work should have been published by a reputable local publisher at least a year prior to submission for the grant. Original unpublished works and works published less than a year before submission will not be accepted except in cases where the author's track record warrants and exception.
Scope
  • The grant shall cover the translation, editing, and review of literary works (e.g., novels, plays, short stories, poems, literary essays, and other types of creative nonfiction) in book form.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • Financial support from the System may come in the following forms: translation fees, editing fees, and fees of external reviewers.

Research Incentive for Lateral Entrants

Eligibility
  • Only faculty hired through latera recruitment at the rank of Associate and full Professor, with a doctoral degree from a reputable university, and an outstanding record of research and publication or equivalent creative and scholarly work, may be recommended for the grant of the incentive.
  • Faculty whose doctoral study was supported by the University in any way, including the grant of salary, shall not be eligible for the incentive.
Scope
  • The grant shall cover a period of two years, during which period the recipient is expected to complete the research project.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • The recipient shall receive research incentive in the form of an annual research or creative work grant for two years.
  • The yearly grant amount shall be 58% of the faculty member's annual salary.
  • The recipient may also propose a budget for laboratory, computer, and other equipment and materials, provided the full financial package does not exceed P500,000.00 a year.

Sabbatical Research Grant

Eligibility
  • Faculty members applying for sabbatical for the purpose of research or creative work (including the writing of textbooks/ chapters of textbooks) in their discipline may apply for the grant.
  • Applicants applying for sabbatical for the first time whose projects are not funded from other sources shall be given priority.
Scope
  • The grant shall be in the form of a research/ creative work contract, and shall be released upon signing of contract, provided the application for sabbatical has been approved.
  • A total of three awards shall be available annually.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • The amount of the grant is P30,000.00 net of tax.

UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC DISTINCTION PROGRAM

University Professors Grant

Eligibility
  • Only University Professors may apply.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • The grant shall amount to P200,000.00 in the form of a research contract. Fifty percent of the contract fee shall be paid upon submission of the project proposal and the balance, upon submission of the manuscript or creative work.

University Professors Emeritus Grant

Eligibility
  • Only University Professors Emeritus may apply.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • The grant shall amount to P200,000.00 in the form of a research contract. Fifty percent of the contract fee shall be paid upon submission of the project proposal and the balance, upon submission of the manuscript or creative work.

International Publication Award for Journal Articles

Eligibility
  • Regular faculty, including those on sabbatical and secondment to other agencies, regular REPS in active service, clinical faculty and emeritus professors are eligible for the award.
Scope
  • Only those articles published in journals as of the date publication in the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Master Journal List of selected journals may qualify for the award. The database lists some 8,000 international journals in the natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities chose on the basis of 1) publication time, 2) editorial content, 3) international diversity of authors of both source articles and cited articles, 4) peer (and blind) review, and 5) citation analysis, which varies according to the nature of the discipline but in general includes citation rate, impact factor, and immediacy index; and for new journals, the publishing record of authors and of editorial board members, where they are published and their citation index.
  • Each year the ISI editorial staff reviews close to 2,000 new journals, of which 10-20 percent qualify for inclusion in the database. More information about ISI journals is available at www.isinet.com
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • Sole authors of journal articles that meet the requirements set in these guidelines shall receive an award of P55,000.00 per article.
  • In the case of co-authorship, the award shall be divided equally among the number of authors, local and foreign. Only UP authors eligible for the award shall receive it, provided the article is published while they are on active service of before their retirement or resignation from the University.

International Publication Award for Books/ Chapters of Books

Eligibility
  • Regular faculty, including those on sabbatical and secondment to other agencies, regular REPS in active service, clinical faculty, and emeritus professors eligible for the award.
Scope
  • Only books or chapters of books published by recognized international academic book publishers, prestigious university presses and other highly regarded international publishers (e.g., Macmillan, Random House, Blackwell, Routledge, Harcourt, Brace and Co., Elsevier, and Garland) shall be covered by the award.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • Sole authors of books or book chapters that meet the standards set in these guidelines shall receive an award of P55,000.00 per chapter and P110,000.00 for a book. This amount may be raised from time to time.
  • In the case of co-authorship, the award shall be divided equally among the number of authors, local and foreign. Only UP authors eligible for the award shall receive it, provided the book/chapter is published while they are on active service of before their retirement or resignation from the University.

International Award for the Arts

Eligibility
  • Regular faculty, individually or as a group, in the field of visual and performing arts, whose work received international exposure in the year preceding the award, may be nominated for this award.
Scope
  • The International Award for the Arts has two divisions; there shall be one award per division.
    1. Visual Arts: painting, sculpture, graphic arts, installation art, performance art, computer art, exhibition design, film, video, illustration, animation, architecture, interior design, advertising design, editorial design, industrial design, product design, and fashion design.
    2. Performing Arts: all music and dance forms and theater arts.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • The award shall be given annually during the Academic Distinction ceremony, in the amount of P55,000.00 per division, to be divided equally in the case of a group of artists.

Gawad sa Natatanging Publikasyon sa Filipino

Eligibility
  • Puwedeng inomina ang regular na fakulti or REPS na may publikasyon na sakop ng gawad.
Scope
  • Dalawa ang kategorya ng gawad at isa ang gantimpala sa bawat kategorya:
    1. Gawad para sa Malikhaing Panulat
    2. Gawad para sa Publikasyon ng Orihinal na Pananaliksik(sa anumang disiplina maliban sa malikhaing panulat)
  • Dapat inilathala ng prestihiyoso at respetadong publisher o lumabas sa refereed at kilalang dyornal ang nominadong publikasyon sa nakaraang taon. Halimbawa, kwalipikadopara sa Gawad 2004 ang mga publikasyon noong 2003.
  • Hindi kasama ang mga publikasyon na inedit o isinalin mula sa ibang wika. Orihinal na akda lamang ang kwalipikado.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • Bawat gawad ay may halagang P110,000.00 kung ang pinakatanging publikasyon ay buong aklat, o P55,000.00 kung ito ay kabanata ng aklat o artikulo sa dyornal. Hahatiin ang gawad nang pantay-pantay sa mga may akda. Ibibigay ang gawad tuwing taunang seremonya ng Academic Distinction.

Advanced Technology Award

Eligibility
  • Full-time faculty, REPS and staff, individually or as a group, may be nominated for the award.
Scope
  • A maximum of two awards shall be given for a technological innovation completed in the year preceding the award.Broadly defined, technological innovation includes any new or improved product, material, process, equipment or system of scientific or technical origin.
Benefits/ Contract Rate
  • The award shall be given annually in the amount of P55,000.00, to divided equally in the case of a group. In the case of co-developed output, only UP faculty, REPS and staff eligible for the award will be given during the annual Academic Distinction ceremony.
