Seven more faculty members from UPLB have been appointed as UP Scientists for the period 2011-2013, while five who were appointed in 2008 and 2006 were given fresh appointments, as well. These recent appointments have brought the number of UP Scientists from UPLB to 31.
Awarded the highest possible rank of UP Scientist III is Dr. Juan Pulhin, joining the only other UPLB faculty member who was appointed UP Scientist III in 2009, Dr. Evelyn Mae Mendoza. Dr. Pulhin was named UP Scientist II in 2008. Meanwhile, Dr. Christian Joseph Cumagun, awarded UP Scientist I in 2008, was named UP Scientist II while Dr. Ireneo Lit, a UP Scientist I award recipient in 2006, was also named UP Scientist II in this most recent batch of appointments. These recent recipients of the UP Scientist title join the 2009 UP Scientist I awardees, namely, Dr. Inocencio Buot, Dr. Orville Bondoc, Dr. Damasa Macandog, Dr. Teodoro Mendoza, Dr. Florinia Merca, Dr. Merdelyn Lit, Dr. Asuncion Raymundo, and Dr. Conrado Valdez. Named UP Scientist II and UP Scientist III, respectively, on that same year, were Dr. Rex Victor Cruz, who was recently appointed UPLB chancellor, and Dr. Evelyn Mae Mendoza. The recipients of UP Scientist I awards in 2010 are Dr. Salcedo Eduardo, Dr. Willie Abasolo, Dr. Jezie Acorda, Dr. Ceferino Maala, Dr. Desiree Hautea, Dr. Simeona Siar, Dr. Laura Pham, and Dr. Francisco Elegado. Appointed as UP Scientist II, also in 2010, was Dr. Pompe Sta. Cruz. The conferment of the UP Scientist title under the UP Scientific Productivity System is based on qualifications and merit. To qualify, faculty members and researchers must have doctoral degrees in the fields of study in which they are being considered, or in the case of medical doctors, must have a masters degree. They must have exhibited consistent scholarship within the period required in the guidelines. Conferment is temporary and is considered only for those who exhibit scientific productivity. Scientific productivity is evaluated based on the following general criteria: scientific publications in refereed reputable scientific journals and books; patented or peer-reviewed technological outputs; and scientific and professional standing in the international science community measured by peer recognition of one's achievements and scientific contributions, and gauged by membership in prestigious international bodies and peer review groups, and prestigious international scientific awards.
