The College of Economics and Management (CEM) is celebrating its 32nd founding anniversary with various activities scheduled in July. The celebration has for its theme "Revitalizing CEM's Role in Policy Analysis and Advocacy in Support of the UP Charter's Mandate for National Development."
The celebration started with a faculty and staff fellowship on July 1, followed by a seminar under the Department of Agribusiness Management Seminar Series on July 5. The seminar entitled "Use of Experimental Economics in Product Valuation and Food Marketing" was given by Dr. Rodolfo M. Nayga, Jr. (BSAB '85), a Tyson Endowed Professor in Food Policy of the Department of Agricultural Economics of Agribusiness of the University of Arkansas. Dr. Nayga also gave a seminar in the afternoon of July 5 under the auspices of The UPLB-CEM Seminar Series or the Special CEMinar. The seminar was entitled "Nutrition, Obesity, and Health: Policies and Economics Research Challenges." On July 12, the Special CEMinar featured Dr. Tirso B. Paris, Jr., a professor of economics and former dean of the CEM who gave the seminar "Making Use of CEM Website for Academic Homepage of CEM Faculty." CEM will sponsor a thanksgiving mass at the St. Therese of the Child Jesus Parish at 6-7 AM and the flag raising ceremony at the UPLB Alumni Plaza on July 19. On July 21-23, the CEM constituents will take a break from academic concerns and hold a sportsfest. July 26 and 27 will again feature seminars that revolve around the theme of the celebration. There will be a seminar-workshop and presentation of policy studies entitled "Facing the Challenges: Agenda for Action for the Philippine Agriculture Sector" on July 26. The said activity is funded by UPLB, DOST-PCARRD, and SEARCA. The Department of Economics will hold a seminar entitled "Projecting the Supply and Demand Situation of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources (AFNR) Human Resources in the Philippines" at 10 AM on July 27. The presentors of this seminar are Anna F.F. Abrina, Kim B. Arias, Dr. Jose V. Camacho, Jr., and Prof. U-Primo E. Rodriguez. This policy research was funded by the DOST-PCARRD and was commissioned by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies. In the afternoon of July 27, the exhibits at the DAE will be formally opened and a special convocation and awarding ceremonies will be held with Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman, UP president, as guest of honor. The celebration will be topped off with the CEM Got Talent! and Raffle Bonanza at 5 PM on the same day. (JMBo)
