For more than a century, UP Los Baños College of Agriculture (UPLB-CA) has been globally recognized in the fields of plant breeding, food processing, and manufacturing and storage innovations.

On March 4, the best emerging technologies developed by UPLB-CA will be presented to the public during the second Laguna Business and Investment Exposition (LBIX). LBIX 2010 will be held at Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

“We have tried developing all the technologies in our 100 years of existence and the problem is we do not know if these are being used already. So we will be trying to extend, and have this known by many people—to have investors, to make this commercialized,” explains Professor Nelita M. Lalican of the Agricultural Systems Cluster of CA-UPLB

Among the technologies to be presented during LBIX 2010 are as follows:

Plant Breeding
  • More than 20 Gumamela (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) hybrid
  • Improved varieties of tropical fruits such as atis, balimbing, banana, cashew nut, chico, durian, guyabano, jackfruit, papaya, pineapple, plum and rambutan.
  • Enhanced varieties of vegetables (bell pepper, bush sitao, bush snap beans, cucumber, eggplant, garden pea, hot pepper, loofa, mungbean, radish, squash, and tomato) and root crops  (cassava, peanut, potato, and sweet potato)

Food Processing
  • Accelerated Process for fish sauce
  • Textured Vegetable Protein from Full-Fat Soy Flour
  • Coco Milk Beverage
  • Papaya and Bignay Juice
  • Rice Bran
  • Pinoy Ice Cream
  • Pastillas de Leche.

Manufacturing and Storage
  • Modified Vapor Heat Treatment (VHT) for mangoes
  • Modified Atmosphere Packaging of Broccoli, Banana, and Papaya
  • Cold Storage of Tropical Fruits and Vegetables
  • Hot Water Tank for Disease Control in Mango and Papaya
  • Extending Shelf Life and Enhancing Quality of Tomato Using Coconut Coir Dus
  • Wax Emulsion for Pineapple
  • Duck Ranger Solar Balut Incubator.

Many of these UPLB-CA developed technologies have been given local and international recognition. With LBIX 2010, UPLB CA aims to partner with potential investors to bring the product of a hundred years of research into a wider market.
