Blue, White, Green, Yellow, Red. It's not a new nursery rhyme; it's the final team standings at the close of the annual Palarong UPLB last Jan. 31. The Blue Wapakels still finished ahead of the pack as over all champion while the teams' over all standings after the week-long games was a reprise of last year's.

Blue Wapakels, composed of the College of Arts and Sciences and units under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Instruction, dominated the students and staff games winning a combined 14 first place finishes - the most by any team this year - and rounded up their campaign with a total score of 1530 points.

The Royal White team of the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology and the units under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development, won 11 events and garnered 1370 total points to place second over all in the team standings. The Green Hunters, with players from the College of Agriculture and the units under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, won in eight events and wound up a close third place over all to Royal White at 1330 points.

The Yellow Raptors, composed of units under the Office of the Chancellor, Colleges of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), Human Ecology and Veterinary Medicine again finished fourth over all with 1040 points. Red Griffins, represented by units under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, Colleges of Development Communication (CDC), Economics and Management, Public Affairs and School of Environmental Science and Management, was in fifth place with 930 total points.

The Red Griffins had more first place and second place finishes from the events played than the Yellow Raptors and could have done better had it fielded teams to compete in eight events. Based on the rules of the sports fest, a team who did not participate in an event would not get any point for that particular event.

According to Ben Arizala, the over all coordinator of Palarong UPLB 2010 from host CFNR, the sports fest was part of the CFNR centennial celebrations this year. Forestry Dean Rex Victor Cruz informed the other competing teams of this during the opening ceremony on Jan. 28 and that it was his wish that they be given a chance to win the Palaro this year.

Arizala said that the bowling, billiards and marksmanship events were cancelled since the bowling center and the pool hall at the Student Union were still under renovation while marksmanship had a low participation last year.

A sidelight of the Palaro was the Mutya ng Palaro. However, it was given a different format for this year. Arizala said that instead of a popularity contest through the sales of tickets, the contest was transformed into a beauty and talent competition with each of the colleges being required to field a muse. Judging of the muses began as the parade of teams started and culminated in their presentation at the opening ceremony. Grace Cielo Acosta of the College of Economics and Management (CEM), was chosen Mutya ng Palaro by a panel of judges composed of Vice Chancellors Enrico Supangco, Roberto Rañola Jr. and Ruben Tanqueco.

CEM will be the host college of the 2011 Palarong UPLB.
