A Tribute to the Founder and Pillars of
Leadership and Excellence
in Agriculture Education and Development
On March 5-6, 2010, the College of Agriculture will commemorate its 101st Foundation Anniversary with a special tribute to its former deans who served the college within a span of a hundred years.
The Deans' Night is an occasion to thank our former leaders whose common vision and shared passion for the College of Agriculture enabled to produce outputs of premium quality and international reknown. They laid the groundwork and built a strong foundation for the College to meet the challenges and opportunities and to transform UPLB into a comprehensive university. The collective impact of their leadership can be discerned from some notable indicators of performance, namely:
in instruction – The Colege of Agriculture started in 1909 with two curricular programs, the Bachelor of Agriculture and the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, with 12 pioneer students who held their classes in houses of teachers and under improvised tents. In succeeding years, 11 curricular programs have been added along with the creation of additional academic departments. CA provided several options, i.e. thesis, teaching, research internship, farm practice and extension/community internship to prepare its students for the job they intend to pursue after graduation. A total of 21,251 graduated under the various curricular programs from 1911-2008.
Many of them are already leaders in the profession: either as administrators and faculty members of agriculture state colloeges and universities, scientists and researchers, R & D managers, community development officers, development consultants, farm managers in livestock/piggery/poultry farms, entrepreneurs, owners of agribusiness firms, quality control officers in leading food, feed and beverage corporations. Others excelled in other fields of endeavor.
in research and development – The College of Agriculture pioneered in the development of cutting edge technologies, products and services within the ambit of crop varietal improvement, animal breedng for meat, eggs and dairy, crop protection, post harvestand food processing for village and industry scale production,. Some notable R & D outputs include the C4 rice variety, IPB corn and legume varieties, flowering induction of mango, “Sinta” papaya, ornamental plants (Hibiscus and Mussaenda species) and many others. CA has produced crop varieties to support national food and feed production programs. The Philippine Agricultural Scientist Journal which publishes scientific articles on agriculture has a wide circulation here and abroad.
in extension and community development - Through critical analysis of farm communities, CA developed extension modalities that would promote empowerment of individuals and partner institutions to enable them to respond to their development needs and those embodied in our action programs/projects. The presence of CA is felt even in resourcepoor, marginal communities where agriculture development seemed to be neglected.
in governance - The College of Agriculture served as the nucleus for the growth of UPLB into a comprehensive university. Starting with only 3 departments in 1909, 10 additional academic departments were created to respond to the growing need for competent manpower for Philippine agriculture and the global community's food security concerns. Added to this are two experiment, research and training stations (CES and La Granja), three institutes (DTRI, IPB, FSSRI), two research centers (PHTRC, NCPC) and one plant genetic resource laboratory. Five other colleges were borne out of CA. The UP Rural High School was created as an experimental science high school to prepare and train young students initially for scientific agriculture education. The Carabao Research Center at UPLB is a joint undertaking with the Department of Agriculture to intensify research on carabeef and dairy production.
Because of their significant contributions in building a worldclass institution, the College of Agriculture was bestowed the 1977 Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding and the recognition as CHED Center of Excellence in agriculture education, research and development, and extension. CA remains a “force to beat” in terms of institutional strength which is derived from its workforce(faculty, REPS, administrative staff), curricular programs, R & D output, extension and other community service activities, support facilities, partnerships/linkages, studentry and alumni.
The occasion may not be enough to thank them for the legacy of their exemplary leadership. But it is an opportunity to conclude our centennial celebration with pride. “ Our predecessors demonstrated what strong commitment and good leadership can do for us. What we need is a recommitment and rededication of ourselves to their idealsand to keep alive the Los Baños spirit (EQJavier, 2008)”. “My governance strategy does not intend to “reinvent the wheels” but shall focus on organizational reforms that will help us to maintain our lead . Our forebears have established a strong foundation for the College (DEAngeles, 2008)” to carry its mission of service to the country and people. Dr. Domingo E. Angeles is the dean at the dawn of the second century of the College of Agriculture. (Juliana G. Garcia, Content Manager for CADO). |
