THE MA SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM

THE MA SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM

HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM

The Department of Social Sciences is offering a graduate program leading to MA Sociology. The MA Sociology Program was approved by the Board of Regents on April 30, 1987. It was started in June 1988.

The graduate (MA Sociology) program of the Department of Social Sciences was designed, first, to underscore the relevance of Sociology as a professional field and, second, to complement the science-and-technology-oriented curricula of the other academic units in UPLB. The main thrust of the program is to enhance understanding of the basic processes of social change especially those which are meant to bring about improvement in the quality of human life. The programs seek to combine: (a) the breadth of the liberal arts tradition and (b) the depth of specialization in the field of Sociology.

Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences teaches the social components of the general education program of the students of UPLB. It is currently offering and continually enriching the social science component of the G.E. program by providing up-to-date and relevant G.E. courses. GE courses offered by the DSS are History 1 (Philippine History), History 2 (Asia and the World), Political Science 1 (Reimagining Philippine Politics), Psychology 1 (Exploring the Self: Thoughts, Feelings and Actions), Social Science 1 (Foundations of Behavioral Sciences), Social Science 2 (Social, Economic and Political Thought), and STS (Science, Technology and Society). The Department also teaches the law-mandated Rizal course known as Philippine Institutions 100 (PI 100).
