CDC Profile

CDC is one of CHED's Centers of Excellence in Communication.

The College of Development Communication (CDC) is the ninth college established under the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

A CDC Backgrounder

1954: It started as the Office of Extension and Publications under the then UP College of Agriculture (UPCA)

1962: This was elevated into the Department of Agricultural Information and Communication (DAIC), having offered the first communication course in the country in 1960 under the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture curriculum.

1968: The department was renamed as the Department of Agricultural Communication.

1974: It became the Department of Development Communication. Then, it was the first to offer degree programs in development communication in the world.

1987: The department was elevated into an institute (Institute of Development Communication).

18 December 1998: The department was elevated into a college.

2000-present

...the College of Development Communication offers the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Master of Professional Studies (via distance mode) and Doctor of Philosophy in Development Communication.
These academic programs have set a trend and are now the models of other academic institutions in the Philippines and other developing countries as well.

Vision

CDC’s vision emphasizes the use of communication in promoting selectively four major value goals which serve as the bedrock of sustainable development. Hence, its vision:

A globally relevant academic institution
proactively promoting sustainable development
using communication as a catalyst for attaining
empowerment, equity, environmentalism, and entrepreneurship (4Es)
in the pursuit of distinctive excellence in
agriculture, biotechnology, and environment (ABE)

Mission

As an academic institution, CDC’s mission revolves around nurturing scholarship and professionalism in the discipline as a means for improving the quality of life, thus:

To nurture the intellectual foundation of development communication
as a scholarly and professional endeavor
towards the betterment of the human condition
in the Philippines and other developing countries
