Research and Development

The College conducts more than half of the country's total agricultural researches, covering the areas of plant breeding, crop protection, food science, animal science and farming systems. Reseach thrusts focus on locally generated resources, agricultural resource management, extension and methodologies, support systems and policy studies.

Some notable research developments and products:

  • Improved/new varieties of ornamentals (hibiscus, aglaonema, mussaenda and various orchid species), fruits and fiber crops
  • Flower inducers
  • High-yielding crop varieties (mungbean, soybean, peanut, rice, corn, sweet potato, cassava and slicing cucumber) approved for commercial use by the Philippine Seed Board
  • Crop protection through biological control, integrated pest management and pesticide residue impact studies
  • Postharvest technologies, including hot water treatment for control of the mango fruit fly and other diseases
  • Conservation of genetic resources in a gene bank
  • Gene isolation to delay the ripening of papaya and mango
  • Instant powder drinks from tropical fruits by spray-drying
